Facebook Follows in Tumblr’s Footsteps - Tests Highlighted Posts

Facebook copied Tumblr’s highlighting idea, but is considering providing a “free trial”. It’s time Tumblr copied someone else’s idea. Oh wait, Tumblr is getting ads (Fast Company Article).

Mobile platforms are the future. HPQ is dropping its PC unit because of pressure felt by decreasing growth rates, Aurora Feint and Zynga have so far successfully capitalized on the $650 million virtual goods market, and an average smartphone user consumes 435MB per month.
I only wondering how I can get involved in this trend. As far as my investment portfolio goes, I am looking at tablet and cellphone chip manufacturers. Since a limited number of suppliers produce hardware for multiple top brands, I think this would be an interesting technology emerging markets play.
Another way to get involved is through an app startup. The only things I need are a developer, capital, time, and an idea. I better get started right away.

Investment Banks Could Be Silicon Valley’s New Best Friend - NYT

Recently I have been debating whether to go into technology or healthcare investment banking. The main factor that will sway my decision is dealflow. I was leaning towards healthcare after listening to Robert Putnam speak at Northwestern University. However, here is a counter post advocating technology banking. Of course in the end, it is all about where I’ll find a job.

vshao:

It will be interesting to see this intersection between the technology industry and the investment banking industry. These have always been the two fields I’ve been most interested in so I’m looking forward to seeing how this works out for both sectors. The momentum is definitely working toward this potentially huge opportunity for the two industries:

Traditionally large-scale, bulge bracket banks stay on the sidelines for tech investments until they are sure they understand the business model and can make a profit. But new new federal rules about how they can make money without ties to hedge funds or their proprietary trading desks have put pressure on them to find new sources of income. “It also potentially creates another avenue of liquidity for founders and early investors,” added Swagar. “If executed correctly, and carefully, the big banks and secondary markets could create more opportunity and add additional capital to the tech ecosystem.”
